Before installing an air source heatpump, our customers often ask: “Where should I place it?” It can be a complicated task depending on your home’s size and layout. Modern ASHPs, however, are flexible and versatile, allowing you to install them in small, intuitive spaces. It is important to ensure that heat pumps are installed correctly to maximise performance and lifespan.

We are the heat pumps installers and have compiled a list to help you get the most from your investment.

Considerations When Choosing Your ASHP

By following these guidelines, you can maximise the performance of your heat pump and its energy efficiency. This will reduce your heating costs. The device will last longer if it is located in a convenient location.

1. Air flow must be sufficient

It is essential that the air-source heat pump can process and circulate heat. The unit is made up of two components: an outdoor unit, and an indoor one. The outdoor unit must be placed where it can remove ambient air (outdoors) and the indoor unit in a place where it can effectively expel heated air throughout your home.

The best way to solve this problem is by placing both parts in an open, well-ventilated space. Avoid placing the pump inside enclosed spaces, such as attics, or close to walls or fences. Try to leave a space of 1-2m between each unit as a general rule. For consistent airflow, most people place the outdoor unit to the side of their home or in their backyard.

2. Easy access to the site

As with a boiler it is recommended that you service your heat pump annually to ensure everything is in order. It’s important to ensure that your heat pump can be serviced and maintained quickly and conveniently. If you lock your air pump into a small area, like an airing cabinet, it’s difficult to perform repairs, replace components, or investigate the device.

3. Noise is a concern

Vaaksair offers a wide range of modern, high-quality heat pump equipment that is equipped with noise reduction technologies. The sound of an air source heat pumps can vary depending on its model, the installation and the distance between the outdoor unit and your home. Modern ASHPs produce between 40-60dB, which is comparable to a quiet conversation or a refrigerator.

If you are worried about noise we recommend placing the outdoor unit onto a surface that is solid and can absorb vibrations. Concrete, for example, would be a good choice. It’s best to place the unit as far away from neighbours or bedroom windows as possible. Placement at the end of a garden or on the side of a house is advisable to minimize disturbance.

4. Protecting your unit

Consider how to extend the life of your heat pump. It’s important to protect it from the elements. Positioning a heat-pump above the ground is a good idea if you can. It will be protected from snow, debris and flooding in heavy rain. Installing the unit onto a stable platform or mounting bracket is the easiest way to achieve this. It also ensures a constant airflow to improve performance.

Avoid locations where the wind is too strong, as this can affect performance. Consider a location that is slightly sheltered or has a natural windbreak, like a hedge. Just make sure the area is not completely enclosed.

5. What we recommend

We recommend placing the unit close to your home. By positioning your heat pump nearer to your home, you can reduce the amount of pipework required to connect it to the inside. This will prevent heat loss due to long pipe systems. Second, any maintenance or service required will be fast and easy.

Make sure that there is plenty of space around the unit for air to flow. Elevate the unit as high as possible to protect it from the weather.
